The Path to Salvation: Believe by Hearing

Today, I look at a brief revisit to the path of salvation.

    1. This includes
      1. Hearing the word
      2. Belief by hearing
  • Recognizing we are sinners
  1. Repenting those sins
  2. Confessing Christ as the Son of God
  3. Baptism
  • After baptism, we are added to the church
  • And receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

  1. The last time I was here, I jumped ahead to Baptism,
    1. today we will go back, and begin at the beginning…
      1. believing by hearing.

path to salvation,

  1. The term the path to salvation puts me in the mind of a road map,
    1. a thing soon becoming a something of the past, being replaced by the GPS…global positioning sensor.
    2. If you were trying to find a location in Kansas, and you purchased a map of Missouri, you would have difficulty in arriving at your desired location.
    3. So, scripture is like a road map to heaven, it tells us how to get there safely, and with a direct route, no side adventures
    4. why would we merely listen to some mans direction, if we have a GPS that will give us turn by turn directions?

I remember once stopping and asking for directions from a man when I was in the Smokey Mountains, and he told me when I arrived at such and such a place to turn around for I had just missed my turn…

  1. we need to listen to the true GPS… Gods Positional System… and that is the scriptures road map to heaven.
  2. Not some humans directions… we will probably miss our turn if we just take some mans word for how to get there.
  3. One last note concerning that map, it needs to be filtered down to more exact directions… when you are traveling,
    1. You first want an overview… we might need an ATLAS:

  1. how do I get to that state?

  1. Then once in the state, We need a STATE MAP of highways, and cities.

  1. how do I get to that city or town,

  1. and when you arrive you need a STREET MAP, for exact directions.

And, the path to salvation is similar.

  1. First where do you want to go? Heaven … an overview The Atlas
  2. Secondly how do I get there? That is the path we are looking for… The State Map
  3. Thirdly, what are the details once on the path… The Street Map

First a short recap from my last visit.

  1. The last time I was here I skipped ahead and went straight to baptism, as it is the most controversial part of the salvation process.
  2. And we looked at the details
  3. Satan is a powerful being, and his attack is relentless, and starts when we first look at or consider Christianity.
  4. And, he begins with our first thoughts, C.S. Lewis writes extensively about this in the screwtape letters, a good reading outside scripture which I rarely recommend.
  5. However, regardless of books I might recommend, the bible is the only true book we can fully trust for the right direction in life.
  6. We speak of Satan’s deceptions, this like a faulty map,
    1. I often say my GPS has lost is sense of direction… Satan has attacked it.
  7. One of the great deceptions you might hear is just pray something called the sinners prayer and you’re good to go… go where? We will deal with that today.
  8. The bible clearly states that belief is the foundation of salvation, but would you want to live in a house when the only thing completed was the foundation? Of course not, that is what supports the rest of the structure.
  9. The other misleading statement, and along with the first statement is baptism.
    1. You hear preachers and Christians say baptism is not part of the process of salvation.
  10. So the question for anyone serious about salvation should be … are either of those statements founded in scripture, and the answer is no.
  11. And, are either of those sources trustworthy for the absolute truth?
  12. In the book of James we find that even the demons believe, and shudder and in Romans we also find that we are born with a belief in God.
  13. As far as baptism, I’ve never seen a verse saying it is not necessary, but quite the opposite… it is mandatory!
  14. So now I will restate the principles concerning baptism, and then proceed to today’s lesson:
  15. first step of the salvation process… believe by hearing.

You cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless you are baptised

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

So we are baptized as part of the salvation process,

  1. full immersion,
  2. in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit,
  3. not for the removal of physical filth of the flesh,
  4. But for the remission of sins, and
  5. as the answer of a good conscience toward God,
  6. we are buried with Christ,
  7. at this point we are washed in His blood, and then
  8. raised out of the water,
  9. out of spiritual death,
  10. added to the church and into eternal life with Christ
  11. receiving the gift of the holy spirit,

sermon/ Section Two: The Scripture…

the atlas of life

  1. The Scripture: It is entirely inerrant and sufficient for all Christian life.
  • There is only one Word, One Baptism, One God, One Church, and ONLY ONE WAY TO SALVATION….
  • But also there are men believing false doctrines being taught by false teachers
  • Begin your journey by putting on blinders… read only from the scripture
  • That will keep you on the narrow path to eternal life
  • When you turn to the doctrines of men… you’ve left the path of truth
  • There is only one path to eternal life.

Section Three: Words

We believe by hearing

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

  1. How can you truly believe something you don’t know? You must take time to learn, exposing yourself to this book leads to eternal ife.
  2. And determine for yourselves this is true.
  3. Consider the value… if you study it, find the truth in it, teach it to your loved ones… you will spend eternity all eternity with those you love, your spouse, your babies… forever and ever. That is the promise of God.
  4. Take time… learn the truth, reject all men’s doctrines, the only doctrine that will save you is the scripture itself, and Satan works day and night, 24/7 to stop you, and confuse you through false teachers
  5. As you know I spend a lot of time reminding you, and not just you, everyone I speak to… of the deception, for it is strong, and difficult to ignore. But you must.
  6. Believe by hearing the word.

How do we hear?

  1. Through Preaching
    1. Make sure the Preacher is teaching the truth

Acts 17:11  These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so

Through Personal Study

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The power of Words

  1. So what are we talking about here? COMMUNICATION, which is the foundation of all things, civilization, science, mathematics, and most importantly, knowing the word of God.
  2. In order to know Jesus Christ, His commands, the commands of God, how to find eternal life all hinges on COMMUNICATION.
  3. The word comes first…This may be the most important knowledge of your life, it is the most powerful thing in our lives, it is the foundation of all things, for it is the foundation of COMMUNICATION.
  4. WORDS are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with WORDS of encouragement, or destructively using WORDS of despair.
  5. WORDS have ENERGY AND POWER with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”
  6. And we are to meditate on these words
  7. To MEDITATE means to ponder, regurgitate, THINK ALOUD, consider continuously and utter something over and over again. (dictionary). This is exactly what we need to do with the WORD OF GOD
  8. SPEAKING THE WORD OF GOD OUT ALOUD aids us in focusing our minds on God. Although God speaks to our spirits we still need to understand His word in our minds. To understand the Word with our minds we need to focus on the word.
  9. I had great difficulty in school, because as soon as I opened a book to read, I would be asleep by the 2nd or 3rd
  10. Speaking helps us to focus. And remain alert… The Psalmist knew this secret and used it.

God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. Psalm 62:11

  1. How do you think he heard twice what God said once? He repeated it to himself.
  2. Try reading aloud the whole of Psalm 119 to yourself. It’s an exercise you will greatly benefit from.
  3. Speaking GOD’S WORD to yourself by reading it out aloud is a good way of bringing wondering thoughts under control.

Matthew 12:35 – 37  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36  But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The most powerful aspect of words, however, is this:

The truth in words

We learn the truth, when we read GOD’S WORD… OUT LOUD… this effects our thinking, it changes our thinking and our lives… and when it is the word of God, taken from the scripture only… we can rest assured that we are speaking and thinking THE MOST POWERFUL WORDS in the world, because they are the WORDS OF TRUTH.

And by this we will be on the right side of Matthew 12: 35-37, for goodness will come out of our hearts, for that what we putting into it.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Proverbs 23:7 Says in part  For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

A quick recap: Make sure you keep your heart, that is your mind, with all diligence upon the word of God, for out of it springs the issues of life, and that issue is eternal life, the true life, and we do that by meditating on the WORD OF GOD, for that will control your thinking, this is how you “Keep your Heart”… and that is who you will become.

For you are what you think!

There is a true word, which by default means there is a false word

  1. The false word, brought to you by a false teacher, a demon in disguise.

2 Corinthians 11: 14 – 15 confirms this as a truth… it may well be a demon behind the pulpit teaching a false word to confuse and mislead you.

  1. It is your personal responsibility to recognize a false teacher by his/ her false message.

By your personal knowledge of scripture

  1. On judgment day… “well my preacher said” will not be accepted as an excuse.
  2. Any man/ woman who truly studies the scripture, and meditates on it will know the truth, speak the truth, and be the truth.
  3. the acid test for both the teacher and the disciple is this…
  4. KNOWING THE TRUTH… do they teach it or a man’s doctrine.
    1. Luke 19:22 (in part) He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant!
  5. There is great knowledge, great truth in the words, BUT, ONLY
  6. There are words that are true, and those which are not true.
  7. It is very important to know the truth, from the lie, or untruth.
  8. Why is that important?

PERSONAL NOTE: Jody and I had to purchase a new car… we normally purchase new cars, we like Chevrolet first, and any other American made car 2nd, and lastly foreign made cars.

  1. So we went to purchase a new Chevrolet, but what if someone slipped a ford in there, and put Chevrolet emblems on it… would I have a chevy or just think I had one when in reality I had a ford? And shouldn’t I know the difference regardless of the label put on it?
  2. Let’s move to the next part of this section, and that is what about those words we don’t understand, or know?

There is great danger in the WORDS YOU DO NOT KNOW,

  1. For instance when I took transcendental meditation in Florida, at the insistence of my employer, (over 30 years ago) who was also paying for it.

I was given a “mantra” a word, supposedly that had no meaning, so when you mediate, I was told, you simply repeat this word over and over, (in your mind, not out loud)  and it helps you not have other thoughts, allowing a deep rest, and clearing your mind… supposedly a great health benefit, both physical and mental.

  1. I discovered years later the word, which I no longer remember, did have a very important meaning of which I obviously was not aware of at the time.
  2. It was a Hebrew word for the “evil one”… so you see, in my ignorance, I was taking twenty minutes a day, emptying my mind calling upon the “evil one”.
  3. I have heard two stories, one of an election in one of the 3rd world countries that when completed the one in control informed the nation that he had won the election by a huge majority…. Well you know those people who are always in the corner of the screen giving the sign language to the deaf? She knew the truth, and without their knowledge, was telling the people, that this man was lying, and had actually lost the race…the people who understood, quickly informed other people, and soon the lying leader was removed, and the legitimate leader put into office… we see something like that right now don’t we in south America.
  4. And, in other case like that, a person interpreting the words of a speaker in a foreign language was saying something other than the speakers words, and got caught, because of the people in the audience who could speak both languages.
  5. Luke 19:22 –in part- says And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant.
  6. When we listen to anyone preaching and we don’t follow through and check it out, that person speaking may be perverting the true message, and we will not only not be aware, we may accept it is truth, and then spread it to others who are not aware, who will also merely accept what the speaker is saying, so allow me to repeat.
  7. Luke 19:22 –in part- says And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant.
  8. We are responsible for what we hear, and what we say, and what we accept without question.

Section 4: closing

I will be closing here, and next time I’m here, we will continue with the path to salvation and study what it means to confess.

And, then Joe will lead us in a closing song, and if anyone is in need of prayer, please come forward at that time

Numbers 6:24-26

24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’

As we leave here today, I pray that you will become determined, to begin meditating on His word, to demand the word, only in truth, questioning all those who preach something other than what scripture says, challenging them with a simply question regarding their false statements, and that is simply show me book, chapter, and verse confirming their statement. You will often be amazed that they will show you verses that has nothing to do with the question, as evidence of

their statement… when you do this, you make both parties accountable, and leading both to salvation through  truth.

Thank you and the lesson is  yours
