Jim Carmichael: Christian Apologetics

Defending the Faith

I dread the thought of even one person going to hell. To burn forever without end?

The worst part; the description of hell is merely a symbol. The actual thing is indescribable in human language or understanding.

I know there is a difference of opinion in the area of hell. Some believe it is for eternity, some others believe it doesn’t exist at all, and yet others believe it is a temporary thing.

This isn’t an argument about exactly what hell is, it is merely addressing the idea that who would want to face it even on a temporary basis, and even if you don’t believe in it, shouldn’t you take a more serious look at it?

You know… just in case…

It has been my passion to convince those who do not believe to turn from death and seek life.

At one time I thought knowing how to defend the scripture with irrefutable evidence of its inspiration of God would help me convince Atheists to consider salvation as a possibility.

I was wrong. It might help a bit with Agnosticism, but rarely.

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God

1 Corinthians 1

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.

22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;

23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,

So what is the final answer to this, why study Christian Apologetics if it won’t help change people’s minds?

First, it is a command:

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

But who does it really benefit?

Let’s look at another verse… or two

Mark 12:30And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.

1 John 2:4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

So let’s put this together, if we know him, we keep His commandments. The first commandment is to Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Can any of us say that we love God in this way? Where there is no room for anything else…

This is the purpose of Apologetics… it gives us a third dimension to our faith.

To help us reach that “industrial strength” level of faith and belief.

So as time goes on I will post lessons on evidences that support scripture.

We will begin with the Bible itself, is it accurate? Has it changed over the years? How can we know and trust in this book of ancient history?
